Texas vehicle laws use a points system called the Driver Responsibility Program (DRP) to keep drivers safe. If a driver commits a violation on the road, their ticket will add points to their license based on the severity of the offense. How Points Are Valued

While points alone are not enough to suspend your license, reaching six points will add further fines (called surcharges) to any violations for which you are ticketed. Moving violations will add two points to your record, and any violations that result in a collision will add three.

This means that once you have reached six points on your license, each of the above surcharges will need to be paid for three years — once for every year the traffic violation is on your record.
